New York Kennedy Airport Information
OPERATED BY: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, under a lease
with the City of New York since June 1, 1947. In 2004, the Port Authority
and the City of New York concluded an agreement that ensures the Agency's
continued operation of JFK and LaGuardia airports through 2050.
LOCATION: On Jamaica Bay in the southeastern section of Queens County, New
York City. The airport is located 15 miles by highway from midtown
Manhattan.
SIZE: JFK covers 4,930 acres, including 880 acres in the Central Terminal
Area. The airport has more than 30 miles of roadway.
INVESTMENT: About $150 million was expended on original construction. The
Port Authority has invested about $6.1 billion in the airport.
EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC IMPACT: JFK contributes about $31 billion in
economic activity to the New York/New Jersey region, generating
approximately 233,000 and about $11.3 billion in wages and salaries. Roughly
35,000 people are employed at the airport.
TERMINALS: JFK has seven operating airline terminals, surrounded by a dual
ring of peripheral taxiways. More than 125 aircraft gates serve the
terminals. The Central Terminal Area also includes a central heating and
air-conditioning plant.
AIRTRAIN JFK: Opened in 2003, the light-rail service AirTrain connects JFK
with the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and New York City subway and bus
lines. At the airport, AirTrain provides fast, free connections between
terminals, rental car facilities, hotel shuttle areas, and parking lots. In
2010, 5.3 million passengers used AirTrain JFK. Recent improvements include
digital signage; expanded closed-circuit televisions; track, switch, and
third-rail heaters to improve reliability in cold weather; and a digital
audio recording system for monitoring critical communications in real time.
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER: The 321-foot tower, which opened in 1994,
includes state-of-the-art communications, radar and wind-shear alert
systems.
PARKING: The airport offers customers over 18,000 parking spaces in a
variety of places, including: multi-level parking garages, surface spaces in
the Central Terminal Area, a long-term parking and cell phone lot.
CARGO: JFK is one of the world's leading international air cargo centers.
Two cargo facilities totaling 430,000 square feet of warehouse and office
space offer the latest in cargo-facility design. The airport has more than
one million square feet of office and warehouse space dedicated to broker,
freight forwarder and container freight station operators who do business
within the NY/NJ region.
RUNWAYS/TAXIWAYS: Total runway length is nine miles. Taxiways total 25 miles
in length. All runways have high-intensity runway edge lighting, centerline
and taxiway exit lighting and are grooved to improve skid resistance and
minimize hydroplaning. A 500-foot by 150-foot aircraft arrestor bed has been
installed at the end of Runway 4R, the first such arrestor bed in the world.
In addition, the Bay Runway reconstruction project expanded 13R-31L from 150
to 200 feet wide in 2011.

John F. Kennedy Airport Parking
There are two kinds of public parking at JFK: Long-Term Parking and Daily
Parking in the Central Terminal Area (CTA). Note: Termianl 8/9 Alternate
Parking is easily reached by following the "Termianl 8" signs located on the
Van Wyck Expressway. From there, take the free shuttle bus that departs
every 15 minutes directly to Terminal 8. E-ZPass Plus is not available in
this lot.
The Long-Term Parking Lot is located at Lefferts Blvd., approximately 4
miles from Terminals 1 through 8.
To reach the Long-Term Parking Lot from the Belt Parkway:
If you are traveling eastbound, take Exit 19, and bear right at the exit
towards Lefferts Blvd., and turn right at the first intersection onto
Lefferts Blvd. The entrance to the lot is ahead on the right. If you are
traveling westbound, take Exit 18B, turn left at the first traffic light
onto Lefferts Blvd., go over the overpass over the Belt Parkway, and the
entrance to Long Term Parking will be ahead on your right.
From the JFK Expressway entrance to the airport, follow the Long-Term
Parking signs through the Cargo area to Federal Circle, and from there to
the Long-Term Parking Lot at Lefferts Blvd.
From the Van Wyck Expressway, take the Federal Circle exit, turn right
immediately after you exit and follow signs to Long Term Parking.
The Howard Beach Station AirTrain operates between the Central Terminal Area
and Long Term Parking Station A or Station B every 4-8 minutes between 6AM
and 11PM, and every 12 minutes between 11PM and 6AM. From Station A or B to
the Central Terminal Area takes about 8 minutes. Please allow at least 30
minutes to reach your terminal.
E-ZPass Plus is available in the Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Long-Term
Lots.
Parking Rates for the Long-Term Parking Lot are as follows:
First 24 hours
$18 for up to 24 hours
Over First 24 hours
$6 for each 8-hour period or part thereafter
Daily Parking
Parking Rates for the CTA Parking Lots (Green, Blue, Yellow, and Orange) are
as follows:
$3 for the first half hour or part
$6 for up to 1 hour
$3 for each hour or part thereafter, up to $33 maximum each 24-hour period
Getting to JFK:
John F. Kennedy International Airport is convenient because of its close
proximity to major highways and freeways. Please allow for traffic as the
area around JFK can become very congested with traffic.

FROM THE NORTH:
From I-87 NY Thruway: South on Thruway-Major Deegan Expressway to Cross
Bronx Expressway (I-95); east on Cross Bronx to I-678 south across the
Bronx-Whitestone Bridge to Van Wyck Expressway south which leads directly to
the airport.
From I-95 New England Thruway: NE Thruway south to Bruckner Expressway; take
exit for I-678 south across the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge to the Van Wyck
Expressway south (I-678) which leads directly to the airport.
From I-84/I-684: South on I-684 to I-287; west on I-287 to I-87 NY
Thruway-Major Deegan Expressway to Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95); east Cross
Bronx to I-678 south across the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge to the Van Wyck
Expressway (I-678) which leads directly to the airport.
FROM THE EAST:
West on Long Island Expressway (I-495) to Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) south;
take Van Wyck south directly to the airport.
FROM THE SOUTH:
North on NJ Turnpike to Exit 13; east across Goethals Bridge to I-278-Staten
Island Expressway; cross Verrazano Bridge; follow Gowanus Expressway north
to Prospect Expressway south to 10th Avenue; follow 10th Avenue to McDonald
Avenue south; turn left on Caton Avenue to Linden Boulevard (NY 27); take
Linden Boulevard to Nassau Expressway directly to the airport.
FROM THE WEST:
Via I-78: East on I-78 to NJ Turnpike south to Exit 13; cross Goethals
Bridge to I-278-Staten Island Expressway to Verrazano Bridge; just past the
bridge, exit to Ft. hamilton Parkway to Linden Boulevard (NY 27); take
Linden Boulevard to Nassau Expressway directly to the airport.
Via I-80/I-280: East on I-80 to I-280 east to NJ Trunpike south; continue as
above.
